About short count labels in social media

I some social media I see some short count labels like “2K”, “3M”. I suppose that it is like, kilobytes/megabytes.
But if
1K = 1024(or 1000)
1M = 10241024(or 10001000)

These days it means the one with the zeroes. There is a new abbreviation for 2^ values, so for instance, KB is 1000 bytes, KiB is 1024 bytes

But where are you seeing the labels? I would expect (on social media) they are referring to views or ‘likes’. In that case the letter just refers to the number: K = thousands, M = millions.
