Hello and Welcome to the forum @greglloyd2007 !

Here is a link to Quincy’s full book that is very helpful and full of great guidance, and insights. I listened to the full book as he read it for us.

Wishing you great success on your coding journey! :slightly_smiling_face:

Hello! I don’t think 40 is too old for any kind of change. :brown_heart: I have experience coding, but I am a beginner to the programming languages being taught here  I don’t have any tutorials, but I do have this video for you:

we’re all here to learn, good luck on your journey!

Congratulations for taking bold decision to jump into “IT Industry” and also for completing 50% of your life journey

  • Did you check all the various kinds of jobs available in your region / country ?

  • Did you made list of points based on which you made call to be a “Web Developer” ( I’m assuming you wish to be one )

  • I suggest do check kind of IT jobs available and do watch YT videos from real world people working in that field

  • Then make a “data” based decision to learn and get into new field till you’re 60  :beach_umbrella:

All the very best

I suggest Replit’s 100 Days of Code course. A full, complete Python course. You learn the basics to Flask.
AND their community is great!

The cs50 course on YouTube doesn’t have any course material.
Watching isn’t really enough to learn.

Here is a link to the cs50 course they update every year, with course material and extra vids:
Its also project based, but not the same as freeCodeCamp.
If you find it difficult, you can always try it again another time.

Again , thanks for the useful replies so helpful ! I’m back here asking what kind of laptops you guys own for your activities ? I don’t want to break the bank but want something that makes life easier and up to the job ! Thanks

I just would like to add, if you do get stuck, or just would like to use another resource, the following site,

also provides guidance and examples, along with quizzes.

I use it along side my learning here. But, I admit to be a bit bias to freecodecamp, as it is very project focused and has beginners, along with more experienced people in mind with the training. It is always progressive, too.

I find the podcasts informative and inspirational for people looking to make a career of programming.

You will go far because you have the determination and the mindset to work through problems, and know to come to the forum if you cannot find the solution in the posts.

May your coding journey be smooth! :slightly_smiling_face:

I started this course a few weeks ago. It’s very thorough and I’m learning a lot. I’ve decided to jump in here as well.

The thing to remember is it is a course from Harvard University. It’s made for intelligent folk. Only 4 percent or so(I think) that apply get in. There is no shame in putting it down and coming back later, as you said.

I’m currently using an old second hand gaming PC that had bits torn out of its mother board

Before that I had an old second hand laptop that was 5 years old at the time and would heat up.

I’ve even heard of developers using their mobile to write code

When your just starting to learn, you don’t really need a new device.
Online environments make things much easier.

Tho I understand the excitement, if your able to use the browser without trouble and freeCodeCamp is working for you, I’d advise waiting at least 3 months before buying a new device.
(It can be a celebration gift to yourself)

Try to complete your first Cert and finish a course/path, give yourself time to see if you enjoy programming.

If you want to start making things locally, you could try using a simple text editor like Notepad  (that is what I used at first, but there should be a default editor on Linux and Mac also)

Welcome to the community

In truth the Harvard course isn’t that bad, but does take some getting used to.

I have terrible math skills and always did poorly in school having dropping out of further education.
Whenever I complete a problem set, I’m left feeling a little shocked.

I’ve found the trick is to break things down into VERY small steps and take them one at a time. (I learnt this while doing the first course on freeCodeCamp)

With learning to programme most people are intelligent enough.
What makes people quit is the time it will take them to learn and self doubt. Even intelligent people sometimes quit.

In my experience learning to push through that is the hardest part of learning to programme. It helps to celebrate every small win.
