Best practices in developing Chrome extensions

I’m currently developing a Chrome extension for increasing user productivity. I know a little bit about chrome extension development and can develop one myself, but I have some doubt about whether I’m following the best practices.

Currently what I’m doing is that I make a change in the code, then switch to the browser and reload the extension and view the updates. Doing this a few times is ok, but when I’m developing a moderately complex Chrome extension, this process (switching to the browser and manually reloading) quickly become tedious to the point of giving up the idea of developing a Chrome extension.

My question is:
Is there any more convenient way of developing Chrome extensions? or is the way I’m currently doing the way that everyone follows, including big companies that develop Chrome extensions? How I can overcome the above-mentioned problems while developing chrome extensions?

Thanks in Advance.
