Build a Caesar Cipher - Step 16

Tell us what’s happening:

I did as the code checker suggested but I still can’t get my code to be valid and work

Your code so far

def caesar(text, shift):

# User Editable Region

   if True:
       return "Shift must be an integer value"
    alphabet = 'abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz'
    shifted_alphabet = alphabet[shift:] + alphabet[:shift]
    translation_table = str.maketrans(alphabet + alphabet.upper(), shifted_alphabet + shifted_alphabet.upper())
    return text.translate(translation_table)

encrypted_text = caesar('freeCodeCamp', 3)
print(encrypted_text)

Welcome to the forum @spydermancac

Did you see the message in the console?

Also, you need to include punctuation at the end of the string.

Happy coding

hi @marouanessebahi

It is great that you solved the challenge, but instead of posting your full working solution, it is best to stay focused on answering the original poster’s question(s) and help guide them with hints and suggestions to solve their own issues with the challenge. How to Help Someone with Their Code Using the Socratic Method

We are trying to cut back on the number of spoiler solutions found on the forum and instead focus on helping other campers with their questions and definitely not posting full working solutions.

The problem with your code is indentation. Because in Python, the code inside a function and the code inside an if statement must be indented to show where they belong.

Currently, your if statement is sitting outside the function, and the rest of your logic is disconnected.

To solve the problem :

–> The if statement must be indented by 4 spaces to be “inside” the def caesar function.

are you sure you are looking at the code posted in the first post of this topic?
