Build a Caesar Cipher - Step 17

Tell us what’s happening:

I have followed the instruction on replacing the ‘if’ statement with an isinstance statement but my code is raising an error on the ‘if’ line of code, i don’t know what i need to add to it to make the code pass, please I need pointers on what to do

Your code so far

def caesar(text, shift):

# User Editable Region

    if
        isinstance(shift, int):

# User Editable Region

        return 'Shift must be an integer value.'

    alphabet = 'abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz'
    shifted_alphabet = alphabet[shift:] + alphabet[:shift]
    translation_table = str.maketrans(alphabet + alphabet. upper(), shifted_alphabet + shifted_alphabet.upper())
    return text.translate(translation_table)

encrypted_text = caesar('freeCodeCamp', 3)
print(encrypted_text)

Hi @Iskenny

Did you see the syntax error message in the console?

Try removing the line break.

Happy coding
