Build a Card Counting Assistant - Build a Card Counting Assistant

Tell us what’s happening:

It is telling me to use “let” to declare a global variable named count and set it to zero, while I’ve already done so at the very top of the code. The rest of the code checks out without any such issue, and only the first test keeps holding me back from submitting this lab test. If someone has faced such an issue and knows how to fix it, please let me know, it’ll be a huge help!

Your code so far

let count = 0;

function cardCounter(card) {
  if (card === 2 || card === 3 || card === 4 || card === 5 || card === 6) {
    count++;
  } else if (card === 10 || card === "J" || card === "Q" || card === "K" || card === "A") {
    count--;
  }

  if (count > 0) {
    return count + " Bet";
  } else {
    return count + " Hold";
  }
}

Welcome to the forum @dukeanon,

Your solution works from my end. Please try one of the following steps to move forward.

Click on the “Restart Step” button and force a refresh of your page with CTRL + F5 then try to paste the code in again.

or - Try the step in incognito or private mode.

or - Disable any/all extensions that interface with the freeCodeCamp website (such as Dark Mode, Ad Blockers, or Spellcheckers), and set your browser zoom level to 100%. Both of these factors can cause tests to fail erroneously.

or - Ensure your browser is up-to-date or try a different browser.

I hope one of these will work for you.

Thanks a lot! Most of the solutions didn’t work, but fortunately, doing it in incognito seemed to work out just fine.

I’m facing the same problem now and I can’t move forward properly. I tried incognito and it’s still not working:

I’m receiving: You should use let to declare a global variable named count and set it to 0.

let count = 0;

function cardCounter(card) {

  switch(card) {
    case 1:
    case 2:
    case 3:
    case 4:
    case 5:
    case 6:
      count += 1;
      break;
    case 10:
    case "J":
    case "Q":
    case "K":
    case "A":
      count -= 1;
      break;
    default:
      break;

  }

  let decision = "";

  if (count > 0) {
    decision = "Bet";
  } else if (count <= 0) {
    decision = "Hold";
  }

  return count + " " + decision;
}
