Hello I’m currently in Highschool and want to go to college and get into computer science but I don’t know what to specialize in I’m looking for something that is a little future proof and pays well don’t care how are it is thanks
Hi @unfoundable !
Welcome to the forum!
I wouldn’t worry about specializing in any thing right now.
Your main focus right now should be to get into a computer science degree and focus on learning the fundamentals and building up a programming knowledge.
Also, take advantage of the internships and other career opportunities that are often offered to college students.
While you are in school, you can start to play around with different fields of programming to see what you like.
Web dev, mobile, games, etc.
After some time learning, building projects, speaking with your teachers and other classmates you will start know which area you would like to start in after graduation.
I wouldn’t focus on “what is the best future proof job”.
Instead you should learn how to program and problem solve.
If you look at any of the specialists currently out there, they have many years of experience and have learned the core concepts of programming and problem solving really well.
Even though they chose to specialize in particular areas, if they needed to pivot because the jobs and opportunities were no longer there for whatever reason, they would be able to do so because they have a solid foundation and are able to learn new technologies really well.
There is nothing wrong with specializing in an area.
If you get really good at it you can make a lot of money in it and be highly in demand.
But don’t focus on picking the “right” choice that is “future proof”.
Instead, build up an incredible foundation and experience over a period of time.
That will give you the best chance of dealing with whatever change comes your way as the tech industry continues to evolve.
Hope that helps!
