CodeCamp not picking up where I left off

Instructions are un clear - I’ve gone to the repository page however there is no mention of picking up where I left off.

I still have the codespace workspace I have - I go into it however there is no indication on how to pick up where I was in a previous session.

Those courses can be finicky, it’s really best to finish a course in one sitting - but usually you can continue. So you started a course, closed it, opened that same codespace back up, and don’t know what to do from there? I think you just need to start coderoad again. Here’s the instructions from the course page on freecodecamp:

  1. Clicking the “hamburger” menu near the top left of the VSCode window,
  2. Going to the View menu,
  3. Clicking on the Command Palette option,
  4. and running the CodeRoad: Start command

After coderoad open, you may need to reset the step you are on to get it working again.

Correct. I started a course. Closed it. Came back the next day (Today), opened the code space and I can see that there is data in the code space. However when I do CTRL SHIFT P and then launch CodeRoad it prompts me to Start New Tutorial which I click, and then it says I need an empty workspace. No option to restart or pickup from where I left off. Just an error message saying I need an empty workspace.

Hmm, that’s a bummer - seems like it’s not picking up the course. I know it saves some files somewhere to track the course and what step it should load. Maybe something didn’t get saved correctly. Unfortunately, you might be best to just start from the beginning and trying to complete the course in one sitting.

I did the Build a Database of Video Game Characters in one sitting - Even have screenshots of me completing it and it didn’t save my progress. It’s happened 5 times so far. When does it work? Does it ever work? It’s getting increasingly frustrating everytime.

I also experienced the frustration of redoing projects I completed. You can move on to the next project, as only the certification projects count toward sitting the exam.

Sometimes slow internet can cause the connection to the database to drop. Sometimes a bug can occur.

Myself and others have completed the projects, so it is possible. I’d suggest taking a break, then deciding if a tick next to the project is worth it. You can always come back to the project after you gained the certificate, as they don’t need to be done in any particular order.

My tips are:

  • don’t stop for lunch
  • start the project after lunch
  • have snacks ready in the kitchen to eat / drink then back to the keyboard within five minutes
  • continuing a previous project is very difficult, so do them in one sitting
