Hi everyone!
I’m new to the field of computers and started my journey less than a month ago. I’ve already watched the first two lectures of CS50 for free on YouTube.
Yesterday, I came across an opportunity to take this course in person at Oxford University.
I’m trying to decide if it’s a good idea to enroll in this program. On one hand, all the course materials are available for free online. On the other hand, attending in person could be great for networking.
The course costs £800, and I would need to travel 1.5 hours by car to attend.
I would really appreciate your advice on whether it’s worth it and any suggestions for other steps I could take to make a strong start in my learning journey.
doing it in person could mean having direct access to professors in case you have any confusion.
Does the price include also a certification of completion of some kind?
You should decide yourself if 800 is the value you would give to those things in addition to the material being free online
Yes, the course includes a certificate, provided all weekly assignments and the final project are submitted. There will also be support available if something is unclear.
I’m wondering if this a typical price for a course like this? I’m not wealthy, but I can afford it—although it is a significant amount for me.
Does the course overview explicitly mention networking opportunities? if it does, those networking opportunities may be valuable, they may not be. It’s impossible to say.
I’ve done in person classes before. I found them to be of limited value both in terms of learning and networking. Experiences differ. Some people find value in it, some don’t.
