D3 Scatter Plot project d.Place = +d.Place (¿?)

Hola campers! I am working on my version of the scatter graph and looking for the way the example code managed the time conversion I came across this misterious-no-google-register line :

d.Place = +d.Place;

Removing this line does not break the code apparently
