Extracting data from an array using filter method

I was finally able to get the result after spending so many hours trying to understand the challenge, thus, I thought of sharing my solution and also request for the masters’ views if the route I took was a proper one.

The challenge asks us to filter and also map an array with ratings above 8.0.
And here is my solution:

Another, one-liner to solve the same challenge could be:

const list = watchList.filter(rating => rating.imdbRating > 8.0).map(element => ({
  title: element.Title,
  rating: element.imdbRating
}));
console.log(list);

Good work getting the challenge passing!

One note, your variable names don’t line up with what your code is doing. It takes a lot of practice, but I’d consider carefully your variable names.

My approach to pass this challenge was to try it the other way around, meaning to use .map first and then .filter but for some reason I don´t really understand, it´s not working this way.

Please see my (not working) approach here:

const preFilteredList = watchList.map(item => ({
title: item[“Title”],

})
);

const filteredList = preFilteredList.filter(rating => parseFloat(rating.imdbRating) >= 8.0);

// Only change code above this line

The same code but with switched order (and changed variable names to make it work) is working:

// Only change code below this line

const preFilteredList = watchList.filter(rating => parseFloat(rating.imdbRating) >= 8.0);

const filteredList = preFilteredList.map(item => ({
title: item[“Title”],
rating: item[“imdbRating”]
})
);

// Only change code above this line

Why?

The map changed what the property was called.

Rule of thumb though, filter before map.
