From Electromechanical engineer to Dev. Career change

I am thinking of starting study programming, I always liked it and I enjoy learning it. My question is if there is any field and / or position, in which I can train and complement my previous career ? I had thought about web development because of the amount of resources of easy access and job opportunities, but I feel that it would be like wasting studies.

Any recommendation?

There are plenty of transferable skills from one engineering discipline to another, so I wouldn’t call it “wasting” your studies. If you enjoy both your current field and programming though, you might be particularly well suited for embedded systems programming.
