I don’t think ChatGPT’s suggestion is good here (as usual). We tend to aim for simpler language in the descriptions and I don’t think switching to a more formal mood is needed here. Strict grammar rules require ‘were’ here, but that usage is increasingly less common than ‘was’ here, so I worry that switching to more formal language would actually make this less clear.
