I got that the goal is not to complete the course but to gain enough skill to develop an application to play around on my own.
It depends on your proficiency. There is a wide range and diverse skill level on FCC. Some people depend on the course to guide them, while others use it as guide to understanding current tech trend that web dev uses today.
Everyone will eventually have to dive into it and code to know what is going on.
