Tell us what’s happening:

Attempted to convert an if…else statement to a ternary and remove the assignments within the ternary. I believe the code is correct, but am receiving the following error:

Your function should still increment counts variable properly.

can someone explain where I failed in the code?

For reference, I have adjusted the code to remove the counts[el] from the ternary to show only +1 : 1 as the true and false statements. But that still failed with the same error.

if you have +1 for one and 1 for the other, you are just assigning one, there is no sum happening

you may need to put back the graph parentheses {} that were around the function body

if (counts[el]) {
      counts[el] += 1;
    } else {
      counts[el] = 1;
    }

This is the original if/else statement. Try writing it without the addition assignment operator. The true/false values should then become clear.
