I had put the .gallery element with nine img elements in ths css, what’s wrong?

Your img elements should be in your HTML document, not in your CSS. Nest them inside the div which you just created.
Also, img elements are self-closing, so don’t require a closing tag.

so what about the .gallery element? should I remove it?

For now, yes. You may be asked to style the .gallery element in later steps, so wait until you’re asked to create a CSS selector for it.

It seems you already got your answer, but to elaborate further CSS doesn’t take any HTML tags except for selecting. it’s purely for styling your website
