Your code for the :root selector is correct but you appear to have inadvertently deleted a significant amount of css code below this (including * and body selectors amongst others).

Hit the Reset button to restore the starting code for this step and then remove only the colour variables from the .bb1 selector and put them inside a :root selector again.
