You never close your anchor tag </a>

where should I close the anchor at the end of alt element or elsewhere ?

Yes, it would be after the alt because the alt is still part of the img and you want to put the anchor tag around the img

<a href="https://freecatphotoapp.com"> <img src="https://cdn.freecodecamp.org/curriculum/cat-photo-app/relaxing-cat.jpg" alt="A cute orange cat lying on its back." </a>

I’ve tried this still no joy

I edited your code for better readability. You are also missing a part of your img before the anchor tag
