Learn HTML Forms by Building a Registration Form - Step 18. Why do you use the # sign?

I just completed step 18. The instructions state " To be able to navigate within the page, give each anchor element an href corresponding to the id of the h2 elements." At first, I tried <li><a href="student-info">INFO</a></li>. It said this was wrong, and I corrected it to<li><a href="#student-info">INFO</a></li>. Just wondering, but why use the # sign with this?

Because the #student-info will specify which html element with the id student-info the screen needs to be scrolled to. Without the # you are not specifying any id for the screen to scroll to
