# Learn String Manipulation by Building a Cipher - Step 75

### Tell us what’s happening:

Describe your issue in detail here.
Please I am bit confuse with step 75
Am I to remove the whole if block or just the if line
I did this
char.isalpha()
final_message += char
or am I suppose to char.isalpha to ’ ’ i.e char.isalpha() = ’ ’
I am really stuck here

``````text = 'Hello Zaira!'
custom_key = 'python'
def vigenere(message, key, direction=1):
key_index = 0
alphabet = 'abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz'
final_message = ''
for char in message.lower():
/* User Editable Region */
# Append space to the message
char.isalpha()
#final_message += char
/* User Editable Region */
#else:
# Find the right key character to encode/decode
#key_char = key[key_index % len(key)]
#key_index += 1
# Define the offset and the encrypted/decrypted letter
#offset = alphabet.index(key_char)
#index = alphabet.find(char)
#new_index = (index + offset*direction) % len(alphabet)
#final_message += alphabet[new_index]
return final_message
encryption = vigenere(text, custom_key)
print(encryption)
decryption = vigenere(encryption, custom_key, -1)
print(decryption)
``````

don’t remove the `if`, just change the condition

Oh!! Do you mean something like this if char.isalpha() = ’ '?

you have been presented now `isalpha` as returning a boolean value, so you can’t compare it to an empty space. It returns a boolean (`True` or `False`) so it can be the condition on its own

This did not work either. I even try doing this if char.isalpha()

Yea i did it without the out comparing it to the empty space still did not work

``````text = 'Hello Zaira!'
custom_key = 'python'
def vigenere(message, key, direction=1):
key_index = 0
alphabet = 'abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz'
final_message = ''
for char in message.lower():
# Append space to the message
if char.isalpha()
final_message += char
else:
# Find the right key character to encode/decode
key_char = key[key_index % len(key)]
key_index += 1
# Define the offset and the encrypted/decrypted letter
offset = alphabet.index(key_char)
index = alphabet.find(char)
new_index = (index + offset*direction) % len(alphabet)
final_message += alphabet[new_index]
return final_message
encryption = vigenere(text, custom_key)
print(encryption)
decryption = vigenere(encryption, custom_key, -1)
print(decryption)
``````

remember to always use correct syntax, you need the colon to end an if condition

I’ve edited your code for readability. When you enter a code block into a forum post, please precede it with a separate line of three backticks and follow it with a separate line of three backticks to make it easier to read.

You can also use the “preformatted text” tool in the editor (`</>`) to add backticks around text.

See this post to find the backtick on your keyboard.
Note: Backticks (`) are not single quotes (').

oh!! I see now. My wrong. Thanks a lot
