In the code you’ve provided, we need not create another .canvas {} as we already have one.

Just include the filter property.

.canvas {
  width: 500px;
  height: 600px;
  background-color: #4d0f00;
  overflow: hidden;

/* User Editable Region */

.canvas{filter: blur(2px);}  <!--not needed-->

This works…

.canvas {
  width: 500px;
  height: 600px;
  background-color: #4d0f00;
  overflow: hidden;
  filter:  <!--content -->
