Is it better to use WordPress to generate sites for small businesses rather than coding the entire thing from scratch. Am I creating unnecessary burden on myself?
It depends… is it for learning purposes? Or for making a commission with the least effort possible?

I am doing this for free for a disabled veteran who owns a small dessert venue here in town. Also, I like strengthening my skills. It is just my design skills are subpar.
If the goal is to help someone create a straightforward website for their business, then I recommend using a service like wordpress or one of the popular website builders. The “works out of the box” experience is what the majority of people are looking for in their websites, so I don’t recommend overcomplicating it.
