Mentoring in Discord Channel

A simple question folks:

Is there a move towards closing out the forum and moving all activity to the Discord Channel?

I ask because of the lower count of people now in the forum, and the references to the Discord Channel.

For myself, and yes, I am only one person so - definitely not the majority - I find the Discord Channel to move quicker and be more confusing to follow - which is why I have stepped back - even from the Supporter Channel.
That said, it obviously has value to many.

My visual challenges make it difficult to keep up, as seen by others when I miss the obvious attempting to help here.

I would appreciate a kind, open and honest response to the question, please?

Thank you for the great learning platform and for the experiences, and learning I have received from some in the forum.

Nope! We fully plan to keep both the forum and our Discord community running for the forseeable future.

Actually, I think you deserve a better explanation than that. The reality is the forum and Discord server fulfil two different use cases.

The forum is the best place to get help with your code. The threaded, long-form discussion format allows for more careful and deliberate conversations, and are definitely more in-depth than the Discord chat. The forum also has the benefit of being indexed internally and externally. Within the forum itself, you can search for your question and see if it’s been asked and answered before. (But unlike other programming forums, we won’t yell at you if you ask your question anyway!) And when you pop a question into Google, both our forum and our news articles can appear in the search results. So your conversations here are helping generations of future developers!

Discord, on the other hand, is only indexed internally. You can’t find conversations from our server on Google - you have to be in the server to search the information. As is the nature of any chat platform, and as you accurately observed yourself, the conversations move at a breakneck speed. If it’s a particularly busy day, it is entirely possible for your question to get buried forever. But that high-energy rapid activity makes the Discord server a wonderful place to socialise, engage in lighter conversations, and make new friends. And Discord has a LOT of great tooling for running live events, which is why I run our events there.

I definitely encourage folks to be active on both platforms! They both offer unique value, and are generally pleasant places to spend your time on the internet. That being said, I am terribly sorry to hear our Discord community is less accessible to you! I am a firm believer in curating online spaces that are welcome for everyone - so I would like to extend an invitation to you: If, at any time, you feel there is something I can do to reduce the friction you encounter when trying to engage with our Discord community, you are more than welcome to DM me. I am happy to do anything I can to ensure you can enjoy all facets of the freeCodeCamp experience.

I appreciate what you, all of the staff, leaders/moderators and volunteers, including the other learners, do to allow us to learn and grow.
