My New Non-Screen Hobby

I have been looking for non-screen activities and decided to pickup the pen and start journaling again.

I usually write in an app, but there I do not get the freedom to draw- it is just heavy text. I also feel, writing on the paper is soothing and helps me focus more and get that creative energy out. On the app, I am not able to disconnect fully, there is always a notification that distracts me.

So here i am journaling but with a twist- I have decided to add photos as well.

While writing, I realized that while writing digitally, I could perfect every word and sentence using tools and LLMs, but here I had to think hard to form full meaningful sentences (I believe this was a good exercise for the brain :joy: ).

For those of you who journal, what do you put in your visual journal?

Thank you for sharing this journal. I can feel the peace in your heart when you looked at this photo and wrote these words. I’m curious what it’s like to have lemon trees on the street (well, I’ve never even seen a lemon tree before).

I used to keep a journal, but I’ve already forgotten when I last wrote in it. I often start, then stop. Why do I stop? Thinking that my handwriting isn’t pretty is one reason. A visual journal is a great idea, using one or two photos with just a few lines to capture how you felt at that moment. I should get myself a notebook again. :writing_hand:

I love what you are doing!
A few years ago I decided to go “zero paper”. At the time it felt beneficial, but I don’t like it anymore! I want to get back to using paper!
Last year I started with a scrapbook.

I think that maybe cutting images from magazines might be something you can explore.

Also, if you plan to use it as a planner as well, you could consider using post-its. This is one of my planners from 2018.

You can also try washi tape, it’s a decorative tape, original from Japan. You can use it to place the photos on the paper, or to decorate the pages. It also doesn’t damage neither the paper nor the photos. So that’s a plus!

I also love stickers! So I obviously recommend them. I particularly like the cute ones. ><

At the end, IMO, the best thing is for you to use things that you feel that represent you and your personality. I really loved how you placed a photo to your journal, and how the whole piece (photo, text, calligraphy) passes this feeling or warmth and calm. In my opinion it’s already perfect. =)

I love that! I’ve been trying to find some new hobbies lately, and journaling on paper sounds like such a great one. Being able to write down your thoughts, draw, and even add photos makes it feel much more creative and personal. I tend to have a lot on my mind, and I’ve heard that writing things down can help you look at your thoughts more objectively, work through your worries, and clear your head. Maybe it’s finally time for me to give it a try too!

Wow, Nielda! Your journal is really beautiful. I can definitely feel your sense of design in it. A few years ago, I used to watch a lot of aesthetic journaling videos, and seeing your work kind of brought me back to that time. I really love how cute the cover is too. I think decorating a journal like this, based on your own ideas and taste, can be really calming and feel like a small form of healing in everyday life. :dove:

Handwriting should’t limit you. As long as you are able to read then it is good to go

Zaira,
I agree that there is something about writing on paper that can be so much better than digitally.

I also agree with you that Turkey is an amazing country. I got to visit there last year and it was such a good trip!

Here is a pic from my trip with one of my favorite residents of Turkey.
