Open source contribution

Hello everyone.

I have heard lot about open source projects contribution that it will be nice to have on your portfolio .I am working on documentation of one open source organisation and it might possible that within a few weeks i might fix or develop tools for them .I wanted to know how contribution is being evaluated by the companies for which i apply for developer job .

Well, my take on it is that it would be of high value. First because you took interest in something, secondly because it actually contributed with either code or technical specifications which is anything but easy.
