Hi! Came to ask what the title says. I’m doing my Responsive Web Design Certification Projects, and while doing the technical documentation page I asked Gemini to generate content to fill the page with. Then I read the Academic Honesty Policy and got filled with doubts. Is it plagiarism that I used AI to give content to my page? Only used it for that.
Hello, anything from AI is probably not palgiarism do to the nature of the concept it self. Its just doing the thinking for you, I guess the real question is are you having Gemini write this program?
That seems harmless.
In my opinion, AI should be considered plagarism.
The poor thing wrote that stuff and then you copy-paste it
At this point I feel like humanity is giving aways its collective braincells to AI
I think you’re fine, especially if you used it to generate some text that will never actually be used in the real world. It’s basically dummy text, like Lorem Ipsum except making a bit more sense. However:
- AI should not code for you
- AI should not make up the complete idea for you, especially for higher-level project ideas. Relying on it will put your own creativity into atrophy.
- AI content should only be used for dummy text and images, if desired, on practice projects - never on the real thing.
That’s my code of conduct, at least.
No, I just used it to write the content (React Documentation) and paste it to have some content on my website. The coding part did it myself.
Thank you! it seems fair now that I see it with that perspective, should I include a warning at my footer nonetheless? Like “This info was made using AI, be mindful and make sure to check with official sources”?
That sounds like a good idea! It’s not a must, but it is only a responsible thing to do. Go ahead with it.
Happy coding!
In the time you’ve spent in this thread, you could have just made a bunch of fluff yourself to fill the page?
I would not use AI-generated content anywhere in your work. That is not content that you, yourself, have produced.
If you need placeholder text, Lorem Ipsum is a commonly used and widely accepted filler text, which would be compliant with our policy.
The concept of AI really is plagiarism though. Its statistical recombination of other people’s work.
It’s not so much that you are plagiarizing Gemini as that Gemini did the plagiarizing for you. There are text fillers like Lorem Ipsum when real text isn’t needed. Or, if you want to make something that has real contents, you can use texts from public sources and just credit them appropriately. It’s not a complicated problem to solve and using a tool like Gemini doesn’t add anything of value.
Welcome to the forum @Kerchu
It is a question of ethics.
If you have doubts about it, then something inside you is saying that this maybe wrong. Listen to your guts. The fact you are asking about it shows you can tell the difference between right and wrong. Most of us like in the complicated grey zone.
Eventually you will want to add projects to your portfolio. If you spend the time now doing some research and summarising what you find, you’ll already have a project you can spruce up when you have more coding skills to add to your portfolio.
Happy coding
Thank you all for your replies and opinions, deffo going to use “Lorem Ipsum” as some of you adviced!
