Portfolio Feedback

Hi!
I was hoping to get some feedback on my portfolio.

I’m starting the job-hunting process, so I’d be extra appreciative if your advice could be divided into A: “You need to do this immediately” and B: “This needs to get done eventually but is not necessarily a deal-breaker.”

Also, at the risk of this bleeding into more career advice territory, I’d like to also request kindly for comment on the actual content in “This person is or isn’t job-ready” terms. (I thought it better not to make a second topic needlessly, so my apologies if it isn’t the appropriate call. In such a case, I’d be more than happy to edit this and post separately in said forum.)

Lastly, I should point out that I’m trying to take the jack of all trades angle because, while I’d much prefer to work in the back-end, I’ve read that it’s easier to get one’s foot in the door doing front-end work. Hence, if you notice my designer’s eye shockingly not present, it’s simply because I’m, admittedly, quite devoid of artistic skills. (Believe it or not, I spend inordinate amounts of time trying to get things to look as bad as they currently do!)

Thank you in advance to those who take the time to post responses. Your feedback is highly appreciated!

I think it’s great

We get a good sense of who you are,

I like that you’ve got a ‘star project’ that you’ve conceived yourself, and made it stand out in the projects section, with the demo which is a nice touch

This looks job ready to me

Don’t choose frontend. Lean into your interests/talents. I don’t believe there’s any difference in the ease of getting a job re frontend vs backend.

Hello!

Lots of strong points:

  • Introducing an interesting person going beyond the generic “I’m passionate for web development 24 hours a day bla bla” about sections most recruiters probably skip anyway.

  • The fact that you can build SQL databases and show it should skyrocket your job chances. Even in the difficult job market you guys and girls have beyond the pond right now. You should aim for those well paid backend roles.

  • Teaching Oracle on college level for some years: See point two.

Best of luck!

Edit: No worries about your artistic skills: I’ve seen far worse on here, you don’t need them as a database wizard, and that’s the job for guys like me designer turned developer .

Wow. I was so prepared to gently get ripped a new one that your reassuring words—far more needed than I could have possibly anticipated—honestly left me with an ache in my chest as I sat reading (and rereading) them today. It was like a revelation that I perhaps haven’t been wasting all that time, money, and effort in some foolish pursuit, after all.

I really and truly cannot thank you both enough. I will proceed with my job hunt feeling a bit less inadequate now.
