I’m looking for advice on how to present purely AI built projects when applying for internships — and whether it’s worth promoting them publicly.
A bit of background: I come from a non-technical background but have always been drawn to coding. I’m currently working through a full-stack curriculum and making steady progress. That said, breaking into tech as a career-changer is tough, especially when most internship requirements feel out of reach for someone still building foundational skills.
To bridge that gap, I’ve been using AI tools (Claude and ChatGPT) to build real, functioning app ideas. I just launched a GitHub plugin today — it’s working, contributions are welcome, but I’ll be honest: I rely on AI to help me understand errors because I’m still developing that deeper understanding myself.
My questions are:
Is it worth promoting AI-built projects on social media and using them in internship applications?
How do I present them honestly without it counting against me?
Are there mentors or collaborators here open to connecting with someone in this position?
I have a lot of passion and I’m committed to improving. I just want to make sure I’m moving in the right direction.
if your projects are brought up during interviews you need to be able to talk about the code, the design choices and stuff like that. Purely AI built projects are not projects you know enough to be able to do this, I would not suggest you use them
Thank you for pointing this out. I see what you mean about needing to fully understand the projects rather than relying on AI-generated ones. AI is fun to use but its not own coded project in the end of the day.
Since some of the expectations for current developer roles seem beyond my current experience, I’d really like to improve. Could you suggest what skills, technologies, or types of projects I should focus on to build the level of understanding which is looked for?
I’ve noticed that the requirements seem to vary a lot between companies. For example, some Junior Developer roles ask for .NET/C#, while others require HTML, CSS, JavaScript, React, Python, REST APIs, and more. Because of that, it sometimes gets confusing to know which direction to focus on.
That’s one of the reasons I started the curriculum here — to build a stronger foundation. My goal is to eventually reach the level where I can confidently build and understand the kinds of projects I currently ask AI to help with. I know I still have a long way to go, but I’m committed to improving.
