Remote Jobs For Africans

Hi, everyone. I am new here at FCC, I am now pursuing Responsive Web Design Certificate. I have read a lot of threads about career advice and personal journeys, and most of them motivated me. However, I am much more concerned about my situation as an African. In my country(Lesotho), we do not have many dev jobs and rarely when there is a job opening, they are very strict with formal education, they would still be looking for someone with a college or university degree.

The truth is even after the hard work I will put in, a good CV or portfolio, my chance of getting a job locally without a degree is almost impossible. Is there anyone without a college degree and from Africa here who has acquired a remote job? If there is anyone please advise how you secured the job.

Hi Moeti,

It’s understandable that you might be concerned about your job prospects as an upcoming web developer in Lesotho without a college degree. However, it’s important to note that a college degree is not the only way to become qualified for a job as a web developer. There are many ways to gain the skills and experience necessary to pursue a career in this field, such as taking online courses, participating in coding bootcamps, or working on personal projects and building a strong portfolio.

In terms of securing a remote job, it can be helpful to focus on building a strong online presence, networking with other professionals in the field, and being proactive about searching for and applying to remote job opportunities. It may also be helpful to consider specializing in a specific area of web development, as this can make you a more attractive candidate to potential employers.

If you are able to secure a remote job, it may also be helpful to consider seeking additional education or training to further your skills and advance your career. This can include earning additional certifications or completing online courses or degree programs.

Hope this answers the question.

Hi, larymak

Thank you very much for your response. I very much understand that in most parts of the world, a college degree is not the only way to get a job as a developer. But very unfortunately in Lesotho that is the only way, I will not get a job just with a strong portfolio and an online course.
That is why I am so desperate to know if there are remote jobs available for someone like me living in Africa, especially in a country like mine where this these tech giants don’t have an office or any kind of presence.

One thing is there are companies that hire globally. I know for example Iterative AI is one

They’ve got devs all over the world

https [colon] [slash] [slash] iterative [dot] ai

They’ve got several open roles, and I doubt they’d be strict on you needing a degree if you can show them some good work

One place to find open roles like this (kinda?) is the monthly HN Who is Hiring thread on Hacker News

https [colon] [slash] [slash] news [dot] ycombinator [dot] com

For the latest one in January just search for

Ask HN Who is Hiring Jan 2023

and it should be one of the first listings
