Removal of Lecture Videos from our Curriculum

Hey everyone,

You may have already noticed that we made the decision to remove the lecture videos from our full-stack curriculum. Please note that this was not a decision we took lightly. Video-based coursework is a pretty significant process to create, and maintaining them (keeping them updated) as our curriculum improves and expands is proving to be quite the task for our small community of contributors.

Additionally, while some of you have expressed that you enjoyed the videos, we are not seeing a trend in the data to indicate that the videos are particularly beneficial. With all of that in mind, we have decided that removing them and allowing our focus to remain on delivering quality coursework is the best path forward.

For those of you who are interested, the videos are currently still available on https://www.youtube.com/@freecodecampconcepts/videos. We may or may not unlist them in the future, so be sure to check out the ones you want to watch.

As always, if you have any questions you are welcome to reach out to me in Discord, on the forum, on our subreddit, via DMs, or at naomi@freecodecamp.org.

Good on you for continuing to try and find new ways to be helpful to the community. Sorry this way didn’t work out.

This is a bummer. Please keep those videos handy on YouTube, if possible!

I’m really disappointed, I understand you have to make business decisions, but this is a feature I will sorely miss

That’s something that I don’t understand, because it was literally something that hooked me up on this platform. I’ve tried many different websites and books, I am already working in IT for quite long but for refreshing my memory I am doing this full-stack course last couple of months and literally lost motivation to continue after videos disappeared. It would be nice if videos that were there would be optional or with some highlighted info that it might be not up-to-date

I sent an email but nobody has emailed me back anout this topic.

What was your question? May as well ask it here.

Sorry, what did you mean by ā€œannouncementā€? For instance, I am doing CSS course (https://www.freecodecamp.org/learn/full-stack-developer/lecture-working-with-css-fonts/what-are-the-fundamentals-of-typography) can I see a video somewhere attached in there?

I mean this thread on which you commented.

It seems to me that since the removal of lecture videos many lectures now have no visual context (either lines of code or images would be needed). There are 2 umbrella issues on the fCC github in relation to this issue (ā˜‚ļø Umbrella Issue updating lectures with code examples ā˜‚ļø Ā· Issue #61859 Ā· freeCodeCamp/freeCodeCamp Ā· GitHub and ā˜‚ļø Add visual references to lectures Ā· Issue #61864 Ā· freeCodeCamp/freeCodeCamp Ā· GitHub). I believe that a more careful examination was needed before simply removing the videos. I do understand that this changes are made with the help of volunteers but I have changed my learning platform to TOP considering this problem.

I will surely gonna miss this one guy lecturer who always leaves just before the video ends. I think I remember one video where he smiled first before leaving haha.

But seriously though, these videos was really helpful to me. I hope in some way they would bring it back.

You can install a test to speech browser plugin that will read the transcript out loud, if that helps.

Gavin has created several full length tutorials for the freeCodeCamp YouTube channel, for example there is this Da Vinci course he made last year (and that I want to follow since last year lol) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mgCqndlTWFU

Fantastic! I use Resolve a lot but I never really use Fusion. I’ll check that out for sure, thanks for the link, I didn’t realize that was there

This! I also lost motivation to do any lectures, so FCC has been on stand for me for like a week or so. His suggestion is something that actually popped up into my mind when I was reading this post. Can’t you like add a tag that ā€œVideo is outdatedā€ or something, cause this feature was actually the only thing that made me choose FCC over any other codecamp.

No, I don’t think its likely that the team will put in all the work to undo this change after taking the time to investigate and make this decision.

Welcome to the forum @Futuraura

You can search for freeCodeCamp videos on YouTube.

Although not the same, you could use the read aloud feature if your browser supports it.

Happy coding

Can yall put them into playlists? Because I am trying to find the regex videos and I can’t since there is no clear order.
