Review JavaScript Fundamentals by Building a Gradebook App - Step 4

Tell us what’s happening:

i am sure the code work as it should but i can’t pass it

Your code so far

function getAverage(scores) {
  let sum = 0;

  for (const score of scores) {
    sum += score;
  }

  return sum / scores.length;
}

function getGrade(score) {
  if (score === 100) {
    return "A++";
  } else if (score >= 90) {
    return "A";
  } else if (score >= 80) {
    return "B";
  } else if (score >= 70) {
    return "C";
  } else if (score >= 60) {
    return "D";
  } else {
    return "F";
  }
}

function hasPassingGrade(score) {
  return getGrade(score) !== "F";
}

// User Editable Region

function studentMsg(totalScores, studentScore) {
    const classAverage = getAverage(totalScores);
  const studentGrade = getGrade(studentScore);
  const passOrFail = studentScore < 60 ? "you failed the course." : "you passed the course.";
  return `Class average: ${classAverage}. Your grade: ${studentGrade}. ${passOrFail}`
}
console.log(studentMsg([92, 88, 12, 77, 57, 100, 67, 38, 97, 89], 37));

Running the tests we get

Your function call of studentMsg([92, 88, 12, 77, 57, 100, 67, 38, 97, 89], 37) should return the following message: "Class average: 71.7. Your grade: F. You failed the course." .

So let’s put in the editor

console.log(studentMsg([92, 88, 12, 77, 57, 100, 67, 38, 97, 89], 37))
console.log("Class average: 71.7. Your grade: F. You failed the course.")

this results in having in the console

Class average: 71.7. Your grade: F. you failed the course.
Class average: 71.7. Your grade: F. You failed the course.

there is a difference here, can you see it? remeber the upper line is the output from your function, the lower line is the expected

I think the issue lies in the studentMsg function. When checking if the student’s score is less than 60 to determine if they passed or failed, the condition should be studentScore >= 60, not studentScore < 60.

In the current code it incorrectly marks any score below 60 as a passing grade. Changing studentScore < 60 to studentScore >= 60 will correctly determine if the student passed or failed the course.

You code is 99% correct. You have only a typo in your ternary operator strings. The first latter of your both strings should be capitalized. Y.
