I’m a self-taught developer from Ethiopia currently enrolled in the ALX Foundations program and actively learning through freeCodeCamp, Udacity, and GitHub.
I have a deep passion for software development and many business ideas, but my current laptop is old and limiting my ability to build real-world projects or run software like android simulator, vm, nextjs and Docker. I’m currently working as a Bajaj driver to support myself and my two childrens and can’t afford a new laptop right now.
If anyone has advice or knows of any laptop donation programs or affordable options for learners in Africa, I would deeply appreciate your support.
Thanks for your time and for building such a supportive community.
I recommend focusing on a single tech stack—preferably web front-end—since it’s a great pathway to land entry-level roles and doesn’t require a high-end PC.
I am based on the states so I won’t be able to provide suggestions.
But you might be better off targeting more specific african software developer groups with this question.
You might get more responses that way.
I think there are a few things at play here preventing you from getting a developer job.
Yes, it is always good to continue learning and grow your skillset you do have some issues with the materials you presented here.
Here are some things I found with your portfolio
When it comes to your intro hero text and about me text, unfortunately that doesn’t tell me anything about you.
It comes across as to generic .
Another thing I noticed was that some of your links and buttons don’t work.
When I tried clicking on your twitter link, it took me to a page that said " This site can’t be reached"
Also, your download cv button wasn’t working for me
The other thing I noticed was the read more/less buttons.
personally, I would ditch those because when it expands it only adds a sentence or two.
So I don’t think they are really necessary.
For the my services section, you have lorem ipsum text for the mobile services section. so that should be removed.
For your latest project section, it shows multiple tiles of the same car website. So this looks like maybe placeholder content and is unfinished?
As for your Linkedin, I think you are missing a lot of things that will help you standout in today’s market.
In your experience section, you have that you are a freelance for the past year.
But you haven’t written anything about what you have accomplished so far.
Also, if you have had freelance clients, there needs to be reviews of your work on your linkedin and portfolio. That signals to other potential clients and hiring managers that you have the skills and would be an asset to a software team.
I would highly suggest go through these resources to help you cleanup your portfolio and linkedin so can start getting interviews.
