You remind me of a dark part of my history lol I used to be the web dev for this company I worked for (wasnt my main job, I was in sales) I built our website and learned just enough sql to build a customer database. Sometimes things would go wrong and Id have to figure out whats wrong, took awhile esp since I was learning it as I went along.
After a couple days of trying to figure out an issue (mind you, while still doing my full time job, so I was doing a lot of the database work on my own time) my boss got livid with me that its not fixed. I was like, its not like I just push a button and it works again! He looked at me all confused, lets just say, he really thought it was something easy like that.Huge fight ensued, I told him I was done, to hire someone else to build and maintain the database. I almost quit my job altogether I was so angry with him.
After a couple weeks, he came back to me, apologized profusely, said he really appreciates what Im doing and to please work on the database again cause he really needs it and to take all the time I need. Years later, he confessed that he did try to find someone to build it and got quotes in the range of around $10k. Thats when he realized there was actually some work involved and that I was doing something very valuable...for free, in my personal time.
Now, I was totally unaware..I was just happy for an opportunity to learn and build something useful...if I had known any of that, I would have jumped ship so fast!!! On the plus, he never breathed down my shoulder about my dev work again. On the minus, after he told me this I was so angry with him I went on strike til he paid me more. Good time..good times. LOL
