the code above is what I am working on, I have checked everything and all it says is The footer tag should have an id attribute set to “footer”. I have all extensions turned off and have gone so far as to copy the id text from the video. Please help.
The issue here is because of “#”. When you do a link into the page, to refer to the id, you use the # + name of the id you refer to. But the id of the targeted element shouldn’t have the “#” :

In his challenge, it looks like he has to create a nav link to the footer, so he needs the id.
Sorry to tell you that, but no you are not talking about the same thing. Compare the code he shared and the code of the challenge you are referring to. In the one you refer to, indeed you don’t need the id, in the one @cakuay refers too, it is about navigation link and if he doesn’t use the id he will not pass the challenge and it would means that he didn’t understand how to create navigation links.
