Early Life:

Muhammad Ali was born Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr. to Cassius Clay Senior and Odessa Clay on January 17, 1942. After having his bike stolen at the age of 12, Clay went to the police station to make a report. There he met policeman Joe Martin. The man who would later be responsible for the champion we know today. While filing the report Clay made a comment about how he wanted to fight the person that had stolen his bike. Policeman Martin then asked Clay if he had ever been trained to fight. After Clay responded with no, Martin told him, "You should not be fighting if you have never been taught to how to fight." Clay then took up boxing under the tutelage of Policeman Martin.

 Early Career:

After advancing through the amateur ranks, Clay competed in the 1960 Olmpic competition in Rome. He won a gold medal in the 175-pound division and began his professional career. In his early bouts, Clay was better known outside the ring than inside. A method he stole from one of his favorite wrestlers Gorgeous George. He would recite clever poetry insulting his opponents. He called himself the greatest before he had proven it. He infuriated many boxing critics not only with his loud mouth but also with his unconvential fighting style. However it worked! Many fans filled the arenas. Some came to cheer Clay on, but many to see him lose and be silenced.

 The Birth of Muhammad Ali

On Feburary 25th 1964, Clay challenged Sonny Liston for the heavy weight championship of the world. After six long rounds of punishment, Liston retired to his corner. it was one of the biggest upsets in sports history. Two days later Clay announced that he had joined the Nation of Islam. And on March 6th 1964 he accepted the name Muhammad Ali. Over the next three years Ali dominated the sport of boxing.

 End Of An Era

The final performances of Ali's career were hard to behold. In 1978 he lost his title to Leon Spinks who was a novice boxer at the time. Seven months later Ali retook his title after a 15 round bout. He then retired from boxing. However two years later he returned to the ring for one last title shot. He suffered a horrible loss at the hands of Larry Holmes. The fight was stopped after 11 rounds. He then attempted a fight against Trevor Berbick in 1981 in attempt to go out a winner. It was a failure however, Berbick won by decision. Ali's final record was 56 wins, 5 losses, and 37 knockouts.

 An Athletes death

It is said that an athlete dies twice. The first is when they retire. Their body in its physical decline due to age. Ali's health declined faster than others however. Ali was diagnosed with Parkinson syndrome. He suffered from slurred speach, slowed movement along with other symptoms. In 1990 he was inducted into the Inernational Boxing Hall of Fame. In 1996 Ali was chosen to light the Olympic flame at the start of the games in Atlanta Georgia. And In 2005 he was given the Presidential Meadal of Freedom. On June 3rd 2016 while in Scottsdale Arizona Ali graduated to grace. After 74 great years on this earth he was called home. One of his greatest opponents George Foreman once said about Ali, "I get so insulted when people ask me was Ali the greatest boxer, because boxing was just something that he did. And that's no way to describe Muhammad Ali. He was one of the greatest men to appear on the scene of this earth."
