Use the reduce Method to Analyze Data - Console.log()-problem

Hey, would like some help!

My problem is that when I try to console.log(); I get:
Uncaught SyntaxError: Identifier 'foo' has already been declared at <anonymous>:1:1
and a VM8752 (pointer in the console) to the top comment of the challenge.

Here’s the link to the challenge

I’m not getting that error. However, I am getting an error with respect to you newArray variable. That’s because you have improper scope for that variable.

Okay so what would proper scope be?

You aren’t understanding how reduce works here. The function you give to reduce has to take two arguments: the first is an accumulator, the second is the current value.

You apply the function to the accumulator and the current value, which generates a new value for the accumulator, and is the value you return.

Your function takes no arguments, and seems to be accessing the global variable containing the example data

I am indeed having a hard time understanding reduce, I think I get the big brushes of the painting but not the details…

Gotta have newArray initialized in the proper pair brackets.

You’re scope is like:

{
  {
    let newArr = [];
  }
  return newArr;
}

When you return newArr, that’s not going to be able get newArr that’s in the inner brackets.

I changed it to outside the if statement (beginning of the foo function), I still get same when I console.log() though :expressionless:

You still need to put it outside the function. You’ve got a call outside of foo.

Gotcha, now I get this instead:

Uncaught SyntaxError: Identifier 'newArray' has already been declared
    at <anonymous>:1:1

Can you repost your code using backticks ```? It’s the key above the tab key.

}
return newArray;
//Final return statement for function foo: all objects with Christopher Nolan values for Director key are looked through for their imdbRating value and then that is turned into numbers and pushed to newArray and then returned
}

var averageRating=newArray.reduce(foo);

// Add your code above this line

console.log(averageRating); ```

So like @DanCouper was saying, you need to review what reduce needs and how it works.

If you’re going to give it foo, foo needs to at least utilize an accumulator and current value.

Another way of looking at it, reduce needs to be given a callback function, which will serve the purpose of how reduce is supposed to smoosh all the elements together into one value.

Alright, thanks for the help!
