My sanity thanks you. I’ll reach out if I get stuck or need any help. Many thanks.
hey there. Welcome to the fCC forum.
Can you tell us more about yourself in terms of you where you hope to be in 5 years? (what field of technology are you interested in learning and do you have any educational background in maths/science that would support that at the moment?)
Hi. Sorry for late reply. Honestly, in terms of my current skill, I would consider it zero. Yes, I know how to read and find myself around computers for the most part, but I havn’t even really mastered A+ nor N+. I’m way behind, and kind of stuck because I spend all day most of the week as a freelancer not earning very much, so I can’t really give myself enough time to even catch up with the basics. I am trying tho. Then there’s the matter of affording the certification. It seems pretty straightforward and yet essential, I feel, in even beginning to understand coding. In 5 years I would like to be capable of understanding, reading and writing code to be able to edit existing code or create new code for apps and websites as well as being able to merge differents APIs and things of that sort. I know I’m in way over my head. Any advice?
Hi @Cybercash
It seems you already have some idea of the things you want to achieve. Your timeframe seems like a realistic goal. A lot of the Campers on the forum have zero experience with web development, so you are not alone.
The courses on freeCodeCamp are given freely. If you mean finding the time, then there are various strategies you can employ. One is to set a few hours spread over a week dedicated to learning to coding, practicing coding, and reviewing what you learnt. Another is to set a large amount of the year, say three months, mostly on coding.
So there is a tradeoff there. Earn less now so you can gain more skills.
At the moment, figure out why you want to code.
Then make a list of all the skills you have. You may find you have some overlap with the skills you already have. Problem solving is a part of coding.
Happy coding

Wow, thanks. Your message actually helped me feel less anxious
. Thank you for that. As for the why, I have some ideas and also notice a few pain points in South Africa that I would hope to address. I think you are right about setting time aside, maybe I was just making excuses all this time. Truth be told, coding is very intimidating to me, and I’m the type of person that wants to have a firm understanding of things first before I do anything. This is a major weakness, and I acknowledge that. So it’s just a matter of locking in and facing this challenge head on. Your message was so simple but it showed me that I would be supported here, which means a lot to me because I’ll be navigating these rocky terrains going in blind. I really appreciate that. Thank you.
Hi. Thanks again for your previous message. I have a question. To which part of the forum would I go to if I had questions about the curriculum? For example, under the “Attributes” section, there’s an example of a boolean attribute, it’s the “text disabled” element. The element does not have a /> to close the tag, but it still works. why is that? Is it a void element? And where would I go to ask such questions?
You can create a topic iin HTML-CSS for a question on HTML
but to answer your question, the /> in void elements like <img /> means nothing, it has become a convention because of common code formatters that add it automatically. In HTML validator you see this note:
Trailing slash on void elements has no effect and interacts badly with unquoted attribute values.

Greetings all, we’re the Miis – a polyfragmented DID system of many. We’re hoping to learn how to code so we can make our own website someday. Outside of coding, we like to draw, write, make and read comics, listen to music, and hang out on Discord
