What is "cloning"?

Hi,

Please forgive my ignorance, but what exactly is involved with “cloning” a web site?

Is it just getting the look and feel? Is it getting full functionality? Or is it getting a “fake” functionality?

For example, if I wasn’t to do a clone of Netflix:

  • Do I just get the layout and feel of the site?

  • Do I get some kind of fake functionality with my own API and data?

  • Do I have to get the data from their API so that it is fully functional?

I hear this term a lot but have never been clear on it. And it will soon be time to try it out.

It really depends, most of the time what they mean with “clone” is just the layout, but it can also refer to simulate the functionality of the site.
