Feel like giving up

Sounds like going back a little is what you need.
Two steps forward and one step back is still a way forward.
Little bit like doing a run up when trying to jump a wall

As I said above, it was only after completing freeCodeCamp ‘Responsive Web Design’ that I managed to consistently move forward.

It’s likely you will “quit” a few times.
But so long as you “un-quit” after releasing some stress you will eventually get past the point where you feel this way when hitting a wall.

Its not easy.
But eventually you start to expect to hit the wall, and will have a bunch of things ready to try when it happens.
It makes it less frustrating while still giving you the thrill when it clicks.

I think everyone who has learnt to code has gone through this process.

Thanks for your response, I took a few days of and slowly eased back into the “responsive web design” course.

I understand the quite a bit and there has been some new things that have been introduced which has been good to learn.

Is it normal to get a little bored or fed up whilst doing this though? Even though i am doing this i still a little uncertain about how much i have retained atm, i am almost about to start the survey form and just wanted to check if this is a nature process or not.

HI All,

Thank you for your response, i have taken a few days off and then came back to the “Responsive Web Design” course, i have since finished the Survey form and it is functional but i am struggling a little with the CSS styling. The course has allowed me to proceed however i am not sure if i should go back and try and figure out the CSS styling as well.

Is it normal to get a little bored or fed up whilst doing this though? Even though i am doing this i still a little uncertain about how much i have retained atm, just wanted to check if this is a natural process or not.

As i am not currently working am spending as many hours of my day completing tutorials. Is this suggested or should i try and have some down time away from coding as well.

What study pattern or structure do others use?

I am toying with the idea of 3d art/ blender instead of web development and as i am slightly struggling this idea seems to keep playing on my mind.

Any input or suggestion would be appreciated.

Kind regards,

Serk

Do you know anyone who doesn’t get bored or frustrated at least once when learning new things? If so, please give me their contact info because they are super human and I want to know what their secret is :slightly_smiling_face:

There is some good advice above. I think most of it boils down to “pick a small project and start working on it.” Will you know how to completely do it? Probably not. Will you need to do a lot of reading and research and question asking in order to finish it? Most likely. But to be honest, that’s what web development is. Nobody knows everything and everyone is constantly learning. Being a professional web developer is a lot like being a professional student. Over time the amount of studying goes down, but it never goes away. That’s just the nature of the job. If that doesn’t appeal to you then you will most likely struggle in web development. But you could probably say that for almost any computer-related industry.

I’m not trying to convince you one way or the other. Only you know what is best for you. Good luck.

It takes a lot of time, persistence, and work. So does most things in life that aren’t trivial.

I haven’t done 3D in a long time and I never got any good at it (I mainly used it with compositing and VFX) but I do remember it being super technical and requiring a lot of learning and work. You might be more motivated by the subject than coding but it definitely won’t be any easier to learn (at a professional level).

Its very normal to feel either bored or frustrated when learning

I like to make really small things to break up the learning process.
for example, if your learning CSS and are not sure if you really understand it, you could make something like this:

This may seem simple at first glance, but there are a few different ways you could make it.

Small projects like this are great for learning, and even better for giving you that
‘I can do it’ feeling

I don’t understand how you get completely stuck - are you using Google and StackOverflow? It is normal to come up against new obstacles, the trick is to find a solution. Every problem has a solution. It sounds as though you have decided to give up, rather than persevere.

Also, it sounds like all you’re doing is watching videos constantly. This isn’t a great learning mechanism. Why not try The Odin Project, reading docs, finding challenges online that you do on your own? No job is going to involve coding along with a YouTube video. I think you need to move beyond these tutorials that sound as though they’re clearly not helping, and look to books and practice problems.

HI enlguy,

I do attempt to look at the documentation on MDN, W3schools and devdocs. I have looked at the Odin Project and may attempt it after the FCC. I understand every problem has a solution, and there might be an element of giving up or reconsidering web development. As i started this as a means to escape my current IT support job which i cannot bare to do so i believe there is an element of desperation that i am trying to accomplish every so quickly to escape the career i am currently in as there is no fulfilment in it and have been doing of 10 years .

The issue is i have tried a few different Udemy courses and the approach is a little different for each and find myself studying over things to make sure i have understood the context of what is being taught at the time.

I have seen people advise things to code that interest you but this is the thing i havent found anything that interests me as a project. In addition to this by trying to force myself to learn JS i then started to forget about HTML/ CSS as well.

This has led me to start thinking about web development as a career path for myself and often times doubt sets in and i find myself revisiting other interests such as a more creative path.

In addition to this i had terrible time whilst university when we was being taught Java which lead to only a handful of people passing it.

I have moved away from youtube and udemy for now and am purely look at FCC to see if i can reignite the desire/ passion to carry on with web development.

If you have any books you can advise i would appreciate it.

Many thanks for your input.
