so i believe that i am doing everything right. i did the first line with the opening thing and then did the opening html tag <html lang="en> i t says that it needs a closing tag and i tried that as well

Welcome Dawnie15 to the forum. Your first html tag is not complete. It needs to be closed. I mean every tag has one left angle bracket and one right angle bracket like the doctype one.
