Learn String Manipulation by Building a Cipher - Step 66

Tell us what’s happening:

Hi. I’m struggling to see what I’m doing wrong here. I think I’m following the directions exactly, but I keep getting told that I’m wrong. It says to multiply offset by direction and assign that to new_index.

Your code so far

/* User Editable Region */

        new_index = offset * direction

/* User Editable Region */

text = 'Hello Zaira'
custom_key = 'python'

def vigenere(message, key, direction):
    key_index = 0
    alphabet = 'abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz'
    encrypted_text = ''

    for char in message.lower():

        # Append space to the message
        if char == ' ':
            encrypted_text += char
        else:
            # Find the right key character to encode
            key_char = key[key_index % len(key)]
            key_index += 1

            # Define the offset and the encrypted letter
            offset = alphabet.index(key_char)
            index = alphabet.find(char)

/* User Editable Region */

            new_index = offset * direction

/* User Editable Region */

            encrypted_text += alphabet[new_index]

    return encrypted_text

#encryption = vigenere(text, custom_key)
#print(encryption)

Keep the rest of the original line, just add * direction, don’t remove anything.

You still need to add the index and have the modulo at the end.
