Learn String Manipulation by Building a Cipher - Step 67

Tell us what’s happening:

It says, that i need an encryption variable, even though i think i have it

Your code so far

text = 'Hello Zaira'
custom_key = 'python'

def vigenere(message, key):
    key_index = 0
    alphabet = 'abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz'
    encrypted_text = ''

    for char in message.lower():

        # Append space to the message
        if char == ' ':
            encrypted_text += char
        else:
            # Find the right key character to encode
            key_char = key[key_index % len(key)]
            key_index += 1

            # Define the offset and the encrypted letter
            offset = alphabet.index(key_char)
            index = alphabet.find(char)
            new_index = (index + offset) % len(alphabet)
            encrypted_text += alphabet[new_index]

    return encrypted_text

# User Editable Region

    vigenere(text, custom_key)
    encryption = encrypted_text

# User Editable Region

What are the instructions for this step?

Call your function passing text and custom_key as the arguments. Store the return value of the function call in a variable called encryption

They want one line here

Then it says:
Your code raised an error before any tests could run. Please fix it and try again.

Please show me your code

Ah no, i just dont get the one line thing. Where should the encryption variable be?

Combine these into one line, starting encryption =

Sorry, i still dont get it. If i do : encryption = vigenere(text, custom_key) it still says, that i need an encryption variable. I don t have more ideas

you need to indent the line so it is outside the function, please show your latest code

Ah finally, thanks a lot you 2 :smiley:
