Learn String Manipulation by Building a Cipher - Step 83

Hi! and thank you

Before the code pasted below i´ve tried this:
encryption = encrypt(text, custom_key)
decryption = decrypt(encryption, custom_key)
print("Encrypted text: "+ decryption)
print(decryption)

But even that the output looks right they are not the answer. ¿Any clue?

Your code so far

text = 'mrttaqrhknsw ih puggrur'
custom_key = 'python'

def vigenere(message, key, direction=1):
    key_index = 0
    alphabet = 'abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz'
    final_message = ''

    for char in message.lower():
        # Append any non-letter character to the message
        if not char.isalpha():
            final_message += char
        else:
            # Find the right key character to encode/decode
            key_char = key[key_index % len(key)]
            key_index += 1
            # Define the offset and the encrypted/decrypted letter
            offset = alphabet.index(key_char)
            index = alphabet.find(char)
            new_index = (index + offset*direction) % len(alphabet)
            final_message += alphabet[new_index]
    return final_message

def encrypt(message, key):
    return vigenere(message, key)

def decrypt(message, key):
    return vigenere(message, key, -1)

/* User Editable Region */

encryption = encrypt(text, custom_key)
print("Encrypted text: "+ decrypt(encryption,custom_key))

do not change the order of the lines, use the variable that contains that string already (hint: first line of the code)

Hi ilenia
But if i don’t change the order the code it is not working, becouse i am calling a varible that has not been declared yet,

encryption = encrypt(text, custom_key)
print("Encrypted text: "+ decryption)
decryption = decrypt(encryption, custom_key)
print(decryption)

If i use the first variable “encryption” the output it is not correct

encryption = encrypt(text, custom_key)
print("Encrypted text: "+ encryption)
decryption = decrypt(encryption, custom_key)
print(decryption)

not that one, that’s not the first line of the code.
