Mat select not displaying properly when background color is set

i have a met-select that is mat select not displaying properly when background color is set. when i remove the background color, it displays fine. i am using scss.

}

background-color: #151515;
margin: 0;
padding: 0;
box-sizing: border-box;
}

when you comment out the background-color: #151515; , the mat-select displays correctly
