I’m currently working on my first actual portfolio, I’ve made one before but didn’t feel happy enough to put it online so I’ve decided to make my first actual one to help me look more desirable, I’m just curious on what projects I should strive to put on there and also any other advice you could offer regarding a portfolio, I’ve been tinkering a lot and making something that I think looks nice has honestly been the hardest part.
Hello,
you can look on the internet for web developer portfolios and take inspiration from them, here is a list of some good portfolios you can check out
30 inspiring web developer portfolio examples you have never seen before
As for what projects you should strive, my best advice is to try to have something unique, especially an idea of project that relates to the real world and solves a problem you faced, basic ones like to do list budget app movie app are great but almost everyone builds them, they are not going to help you stand out
Are you trying to get work as a freelancer? If so, think of your portfolio as a catalog of the types of services that you offer. Make example projects that are good examples of what you can do and to help you figure out what you would charge for similar work.
If you’re hoping to get work on a development team, don’t create projects specifically for a “portfolio”.
Could you elaborate on what projects for a development team might look like?
Also, if one is looking to build a portfolio for work on a dev team does this mean it’s okay to show a project that you contributed to, but didn’t code up entirely on your own?
I mean, I recommend against creating a “portfolio” as part of a job application process. The kind of “toy” projects designed to learn or demonstrate a skill look like exactly that.
What I recommend is that you forget about the idea of a “portfolio” and start building a project that you care about. It can be literally anything. Any topic
, any framework. Build something that you want to use. Build something that will take months or years of work. Sharing your passion project in an interview will highlight your ability to build something where sharing a skill-demo portfolio will highlight that you’ve never built anything that you care about. Over the years, you might build multiple large, complex project that you care about and want to show off. At that point, maybe you’ll want to put them on a portfolio-type page. Maybe you’ll just put them on your resume.
You should absolutely include any project that you make significant contributions to on your resume. Skip the portfolio. Focus on the resume.
Thank you for the advice and elaborating on this topic, very helpful!
