Python List Problem

Hi, I am having this weird problem with Python Lists.

data = data=[[0]*24]*7
data[3][0] = 4
print(data)

Output -

[[4, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0], [4, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0], [4, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0], [4, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0], [4, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0], [4, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0], [4, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0]]

Why all the lists are getting updated with the 4, when only the item at (3, 0) position should update?

I tried but could not understand.

If we execute line 2 in C programing language,

data[3][0] = 4

it will only change the value at 3, 0 location.
But in python why does it change the data in all the sub lists.

you first created a list with all the 0s inside, and then copied it - though you have copied a reference to the list, not copied the list itself, so each of the inner lists you see are actually the same list, so if you change one of them , you change all of them

You can try to convert the list to string and i think that will solve your problem, check this List to string
