Reduce method Challenge

I’ve completed the challenge using filter and reduce. But something tells me am supposed to use just filter for this
My code using both, filter and reduce.

var nolanMovies = watchList.filter(dir => dir.Director === "Christopher Nolan");
var numberOfNolanMovies = nolanMovies.length;
var totalRating = nolanMovies.reduce((acc, sum) => parseFloat(acc)+parseFloat(sum.imdbRating), 0);

My code with just reduce:

    if(sum["Director"]==="Christopher Nolan")
    return parseFloat(acc)+parseFloat(sum.imdbRating);
},0);

What is wrong with this function? It returns undefined, but why isn’t it changing value looping through watchList?

First, always use blocks for if, else, while, … even if it’s one line of statement

Note above if, when is false, so it doesn’t return anything, and could make faulty result(what you get undefined).

I’m not sure what is the case-study, but what about this?

if(sum["Director"]==="Christopher Nolan"){
    return parseFloat(acc)+parseFloat(sum.imdbRating);
}
return acc;

For what it’s worth map and filter can be written in terms of a reduce anyway - reduce is more general

It’s not clear to me how one would use a single filter to solve the problem - you after all need to produce the average at the end, which involves a kind of reduce anyway, does it not?

I got it now comrade.

The challenge needs you give the average, not the total value.

Simple have a variable like c before you go for reduce with value 0.

The nin reduce, when you reach the if, then add one to c.

Finally divide the total value with the c, and it’s the answer.

var nolanMovies = watchList.reduce((acc, sum) => {
    if(sum["Director"]==="Christopher Nolan"){
      c++;
    return parseFloat(acc)+parseFloat(sum.imdbRating);
    }
    return acc;

[edit: above declaration is useless, since nolanMovies returns an int, your approach is right]

It worked!
Why are we returning acc again? If it’s been incremented properly, shouldn’t it already return the value inside the if statement?

Well I’m not JS expert bro, but seems reduce supposed to return something while accas input is the last known result from previous loop. I think it’s possible to get it work with another types maybe string! not sure.

I also prefer simple loop form, rather than reduce, map, filter, … It’s more portable and more easier.
