@NW-Browncoat I don’t see why not. It’s never too late to learn and you seem to have the drive. Keep pushing. I am rooting for you.
I am close to your age, so my hope level went way up! Its good you have experience in a related industry. I have none but will keep trying to learn. I don’t expect to be hired by a company easily, so I’m hoping I can get enough knowledge and experience from projects and someday create apps. It would be great to hear of your status now and then. Thanks so much for sharing!
Kudos. Good for you.
It depends on your motivation, discipline and talents, on the one hand.
On the other hand, it also depends on where you live and the economy.
Where I live, when companies want to hire a programmer/software engineer/developer they are looking for someone with an appropriate college degree (Bachelor or Master in Computer Science). If you want to start as a programmer/developer 40 years is already way too old for a junior position. At 35 you might get lucky, but for starting a new career as a developer it would be best if you are under 30. The job market here is really strict (as in stick up their butt).
So look around. What vacancies are there in your area, talk to some people, go the meetings if that is possible and, if you work for a large company, look for internal vacancies.
Hey fellow coders! I just want to thank everyone who contributed to this topic and the great advice and experience that has been shared. I’m 58 and on this tech journey. I needed a career change and wanted to do something I actually enjoyed for a change, instead of just a job for a paycheck. Took me a long time to find my way to tech and I cannot conceive of abandoning my “dream”, finally doing something I truly enjoy because of my age. I get weird about the ageism thing. I guess I’ve decided that if I’m willing and motivated to do the hard work, then I cannot count myself out in the end. Thanks to everyone who is taking this journey with me “later in life” and for all the great support! I wish you all happy coding and faith!
As a 58 year old coding newbie, I cannot thank you @MartyBowman enough for sharing this! Your post was the perfect thing to read for me (and thank you dear Ann Landers - I remember you!). I’ll remember these words
I’m 46. I’m just going to focus on becoming a good developer more than anything else(for now). If no one will hire me I can still do something with the skills, even if its just contributing to open source projects that add value to the world. Having the skills creates possibilities: open source projects, freelancing, creating my own apps, or perhaps a real job.
@robynj And now you’ve just made my day.
I just started playing guitar and belong to a facebook group where this question comes up a lot. We have people in their 70’s that are just getting started. To me, learning new things and new experiences that make life interesting and worth living.
To your success,
MB
Get to work and learn it all. Im 50, and im changing careers. Ive been there and done about everything raising a kid. The market is always changing, but I noticed the common base is HTML, CSS, and Javascript. If you can get thru those, you’re going to be fine.
Thanks to Covid, i've had plenty of time to either watch paint dry, or better myself. With everyone loosing their jobs, getting a job now is going to be harder than before.
Make it your goal to learn the basics and follow the trend of what you want to do with it. You’e always going to be learning - and with the ‘time under your belt’, youre more likely to finish it. There are no shortcuts, but you got this.
From one ‘speed limit’ to another, go for it!
Afternoon all,
I’m mid fifties, twice made redundant in the last year, and am unlikely to ever get another job in my field.
So I started this course/s about a fortnight ago and have been struggling somewhat, as I do not come from an IT/tech or Stem background of any sort, however it’s really encouraging reading some of the comments on here, and nice to know I am not alone age-wise.
So I am going to keep at it (apologies in advance for all the daft forum questions I will be posting as I get stuck on the challenges)
Many thanks
Andy
@MartyBowman You! 're an inspiration and I so appreciate you and your shares! I agree Marty, it’s the things we pursue - our interests, passions, learning new things that define “living”. You and your fb group are AMAZING and I salute you! To OUR success
One of the things I love about FFC @Abransco is the genuine support in this community. We are all happy that you’re here and there really are no daft questions! Glad to have you on this journey with us Andy and don’t hesitate to reach out.
Hey robynj,
I just noticed your link and checked out your portfolio site. Very Nice!!
Graphic Art has always been an interest of mine. And by interest, I mean I have no artistic talent but I really enjoy other people’s work because I know how hard it is.
“Moody Parlors” was my favorite. It made me want to buy the CD just to be able to look at it every day.

Hello there @MartyBowman! I’m so sorry it took me a while to reply! I ran into a troublesome problem with Git and some new code I wanted published.
I cannot thank you enough for your wonderful compliment about my portfolio site and the “Moody Parlors” graphic!! I’m still smiling! It was also great of you to take the time to check it out . As far as graphics go, if I could do anything it would be designing cd/album covers. That was the most fun I’ve had doing anything in graphics. “Moody Parlors” and the “Rising Phoenixx” bookcover are my favorite.
Hope all is going well with coding and guitar Marty and I’m sending positive energy your way! Thanks so much again .
Hey robynj,
I’m getting ready to do my first two side-gig sites. Seeing your site made me want to have a portfolio site of my own, and you can’t really have one until you’ve got something to put on it, right?
Yep, that’s me. Always thinking.
Hope you have a good weekend,
MB
PS Glad you got your Git working.
We’re you able to get a job after completing the Texas boot camp? How much was the boot amp?

Hey there @MartyBowman…hope all went well with your site! I still work on improving my code on my portfolio and am working on a new portfolio site that I feel has a more contemporary/professional look and feel. But…I need more projects, better projects to populate that one with. Busy trying to learn JS and believe I’m a developer lol. I wish you Happy Christmas and a substantially much better New Year for you and yours!
