Asking for advice on my first internship

Hi everyone, hope you are having a fantastic day so far.

I am a master student in applied cognitive psychology/neuroscience, and I am about to graduate in a few more months once my internship is settled. I am aiming for games user research/UX research/data analyst role in the gaming industry.

Since I think that the first internship is quite important, I am trying to decide whether I should find projects from university professors or look for work from gaming companies or studios. The former one is easier to find (it seems), while the latter one takes more time and is harder than working in university, but I suspect the industry route would open more doors if I want to work in games in a long run.

My main hesitation is confidence. My background is strong on experimental design and interpreting behavioural data, but I don’t have any experience in shipping product and I am not sure how well that translates to industry work.

I want to ask

  • which internship gave you more traction early on?
  • what would you focus on to prepare?

I keep reading that AI would merge and automate a lot of UX/data work, how can I be more adaptive?

Any suggestions about internship preparation or career advice are super welcome.

Many thanks
