Former Changelog host Jerod Santo just published this insightful blog post of how he thinks GitHub could be disrupted.

He essentially argues GitHub is:

  1. Straining its infrastructure to the breaking point (and breaking ever is it)
  2. Enabling “agent-native” competitors (do we even need a UX like GitHub if the future is mostly agents reviewing the code of agents?)
  3. Driving its own roadmap for the future (they also seem to be over-using AI to the extent that their own code quality degrades)

How vulnerable do you think GitHub really is here?

I have lots of friends who have moved off of GitHub years ago for a variety of reasons. And some that have to use it because of work but would prefer not to. With all of the recent developments it will be interesting to see where GitHub is in a few years.

Yeah, the number of incidents reported is not good. I mean good on their CTO for being honest and saying it wasn’t acceptable. But they definitely can’t afford to have another year of incidents like that.

But also as the article mentioned, people are getting tired of going to GitHub and it being down for a few hours. When you really need to ship something or conduct a PR review, the last thing you want to do is hang around forever for the platform to start working again.

In the coming years, there will be dozens of GitHub alternatives.

Everyone already sees what they’re not getting right. They became the default, got comfortable, accumulated [and keep accumulating] compromises.

Now, startups are jumping into that gap to build the version of GitHub people wish they still had.

If they want to survive this storm, they should first hand that autonomy back to GitHub.

Today github actions has been so terrible to me. I’m trying to push the easiest things–my code HAS ZERO problems and github refuses to push. It’s so weird.
